Sewer's Guide to Sewing Your First Waist Bag
Ready to Sew Your First Bag? Let's Do This!
If you've been wanting to try bag-making but don't know where to start, you're in the right place. Sewing your own bag is one of the most satisfying projects — you end up with something beautiful AND functional that you made with your own hands. In this tutorial, we'll walk you through the basics using our best-selling Crossbody Waist Bag Digital PDF Sewing Pattern.
This pattern is perfect for beginners — it comes in two sizes, uses straightforward construction techniques, and results in a stylish bag you'll actually want to carry every day.

What You'll Need
Before you start, gather these supplies:
- Fabric: About ½ yard of medium-weight fabric (canvas, denim, or quilting cotton work great)
- Lining fabric: ½ yard of coordinating fabric
- Interfacing: Fusible foam and woven interfacing for structure
- Hardware: One zipper (length depends on your chosen size), D-rings, swivel clips, and an adjustable strap slider
- Thread: Matching polyester thread
- Basic tools: Sewing machine, scissors or rotary cutter, cutting mat, ruler, pins or clips, iron

Step 1: Print and Prepare Your Pattern
After downloading your PDF pattern, print it at 100% scale (no scaling/fit to page). The pattern includes a test square — measure it to confirm your print is accurate before cutting anything.
Cut out all pattern pieces and label them so you know which is which. The pattern includes two sizes, so decide which size you'd like to make before cutting your fabric.
Step 2: Cut Your Fabric
Lay your fabric flat and pin or trace your pattern pieces onto it. Cut carefully along the lines. Repeat for your lining fabric.
Then, following the pattern instructions, cut and fuse your interfacing to the wrong side of your outer fabric pieces. This gives your bag its structure and body.
Beginner tip: Use a hot iron and press firmly for 10–15 seconds per section when fusing interfacing. Don't slide the iron — lift and press.
Step 3: Sew the Zipper Pocket
The zipper pocket is often the part beginners feel most nervous about — but don't worry! The pattern includes clear, illustrated instructions. Take it slow, and remember: you can always use a seam ripper and try again.
Key tips for a clean zipper installation:
- Use a zipper foot on your sewing machine
- Sew slowly and keep your stitching straight
- Press the fabric away from the zipper before topstitching
Step 4: Assemble the Bag Body
With your pockets done, it's time to put the bag together! You'll sew the outer bag pieces together, then the lining pieces, and finally join them. The pattern walks you through attaching the D-rings and hardware at this stage too.
Beginner tip: Clip curves and corners before turning your bag right-side out — this helps everything lie flat and look professional.
Step 5: Attach the Strap and Finish
The final step is making and attaching the adjustable strap. Thread your webbing through the hardware following the pattern diagram, and you're done!
Give your finished bag a good press with a steam iron to smooth everything out. Stand back and admire your work — you just made a bag! 🎉
